The number of job openings in the US rose by 374,000 to 7.769 million in May 2025, the highest level since November 2024 and well above market expectations of 7.3 million. The largest gains were seen in accommodation and food services, which added 314,000 openings, followed by finance and insurance with an increase of 91,000. In contrast, job openings in the federal government declined by 39,000. Regionally, openings increased sharply in the South (+310,000), followed by the Midwest (+97,000) and the Northeast (+45,000). However, the West saw a decline of 77,000 openings.
