The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.2% month-over-month in April 2025, following a 0.1% decline in March and falling short of market expectations for a 0.3% increase. Shelter costs rose 0.3%, accounting for more than half of the overall monthly gain. Energy prices increased by 0.7%, driven by higher natural gas and electricity costs, which offset a decline in gasoline prices. Additional upward pressure came from household furnishings and operations, medical care, motor vehicle insurance, education, and personal care. In contrast, food prices edged down 0.1%, as a 0.4% drop in the food-at-home index outweighed a 0.4% rise in food-away-from-home prices. Costs for airline fares, used cars and trucks, communication, and apparel also fell.
