The Dallas Fed’s general business activity index for Texas manufacturing fell to -1.8 in August 2025 from 0.9 in July, indicating only a mild contraction. The production index came in at 15.3, down from July’s reading of 21.3 but still well above average. Nevertheless, the new orders index turned positive for the first time since January, rising to 5.8 from -3.6. The capacity utilization index remained elevated but slipped to 13.7 from 17.3. The shipments index shot up 12 points to 14.2, its highest reading in more than three years. The employment index held steady at 8.8, with 20% of firms noting net hiring and 11% noting net layoffs. The company outlook index remained slightly positive at 3.3. The outlook uncertainty index rose seven points to 18.3. Expectations for manufacturing activity six months from now improved. On the price front, the raw materials prices index edged up to 43.7—well above its average of 27.4—while the finished goods prices index rose four points to 15.1.
