Building permits in the United States fell by 0.6% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1.473 million in January of 2025, against preliminary estimates that they would increase 0.1% to 1.483 million, final data showed. Single-family permits went down by 0.2% to an annualized rate of 994 thousand, while permits for buildings with five or more units dropped by 2.5% to 422 thousand. Among different regions, permits fell in the Northeast (-6.8% to 137 thousand), and the South (-1.1% to 798 thousand). On the other hand, permits increased in the West (1.6% to 314 thousand) and the Midwest (2.3% to 224 thousand).
