The British economy expanded 0.7% on quarter in Q1 2025, compared to 0.1% in Q4 and forecasts of 0.6%, preliminary figures showed. It is the strongest growth rate in 3 quarters, with the largest contribution coming from the services sector (0.7%), mostly administrative and support service activities (3.3%) and retail trade (1.5%). Meanwhile, production increased by 1.1% following falls in the previous three quarters, led by manufacture of transport equipment (2.7%) and machinery and equipment (3.8%). In contrast, construction output remained unchanged. Looking at the expenditure side, growth was supported by a 2.9% increase in gross fixed capital formation, mainly due to higher imports of aircraft, along with investments in ICT equipment, other machinery and equipment, and construction of buildings and structures. Net trade also contributed positively, with exports rising by 3.5% while imports grew by 2.1%. Household consumption edged up by 0.2%. Year-on-year, the GDP expanded 1.3%.
