The GfK Consumer Confidence Index for the UK rose to -17 in October 2025 from -19 in September, beating expectations for a decline to -20 as shoppers geared up for the Black Friday sales despite concerns over the upcoming Budget. The gain was mainly driven by a four-point rise in the major purchase index, which measures confidence in buying big-ticket items, to -12. Expectations for the general economic situation over the next 12 months also climbed two points to -30, while the outlook for personal finances slipped one point to +3. Neil Bellamy, GfK’s consumer insights director, noted that consumers have been delaying major purchases until Black Friday on November 28, adding that both shoppers and retailers will closely watch whether the Chancellor’s Budget boosts or curbs spending during the key sales weekend.
