The GfK Consumer Confidence Index in the United Kingdom fell 4 points to -23 in April 2025, hitting its lowest level since November 2023 amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living and escalating global trade tensions. The latest figure also came in worse than market expectations of -22. The index measuring expectations for the economy over the next 12 months plunged 8 points to -37, marking its weakest reading since March 2023. Meanwhile, consumers’ assessment of their personal financial situation dropped 4 points to -3. Neil Bellamy, Consumer Insights Director at GfK, attributed the decline to “multiple April cost increases” affecting households, including hikes in energy, water, and telecom bills, along with rises in stamp duty, council tax, and road charges. Bellamy also noted that consumers are increasingly anxious amid "dire warnings of renewed high inflation" fueled by the Trump tariffs.
