The annual inflation rate in Taiwan rose to 2.66% in January 2025, up from 2.10% in the previous month and above the expected 2.47%. This marks the highest reading since February of last year, driven by a rebound in prices for transportation and communication (0.53% vs -0.32% in December) and faster increases in the costs of education and entertainment (3.47% vs 0.94%) and miscellaneous goods (4.16% vs 2.52%). Conversely, inflation slowed for food (3.72% vs 4.07%), housing (2.37% vs 2.39%), and health (2.31% vs 2.44%). Costs for clothing also continued to decline, falling 0.84%, matching the pace in December. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.25%, following a 0.15% gain in the previous period.
