South Africa’s annual inflation rate edged up to 2.8% in April 2025, slightly higher than 2.7% in March, which was the lowest level since June 2020. The main upward contributions came from prices for housing and utilities (4.4%, the same as in March), led by electricity, gas, and fuel prices (11.6%); food and non-alcoholic beverages (4%, up from 2.7%); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (4.7%, up from 4.1%); and restaurants and accommodation services (3%, though down from 4.2%). In contrast, the main downward pressure came from transport prices, which fell 3.9%, a sharper drop than 2.4% in March, mainly due to a 13.4% decline in fuel cost. Services inflation rose to 3.8% from 3.5%, while goods inflation eased to 1.7% from 2%. On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.3%, slightly below the 0.4% rise recorded in March. Meanwhile, annual core inflation rate eased to 3%, the lowest since July 2021, compared to 3.1% in March.
