Slovakia's trade deficit widened sharpy to EUR 700.6 million in December 2024 from EUR 199.1 million in the corresponding month of the previous year, defying market forecasts of a EUR 98 million surplus, as imports rose much faster than exports. Year-on-year, exports grew 3.6% to EUR 7,711.8 million amid higher sales of mineral fuels. Meanwhile, imports climbed 10.1% to EUR 8,412.3 million, primarily due to increased purchases of machinery and transport equipment. In 2024, the country recorded a trade surplus of EUR 3,054.2 million, down from EUR 4,503.4 million in 2023, as exports fell (-1.5%) more than imports (-0.2%). The share of EU member states was nearly 78% in exports and approximately 65% in imports.
