Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump this week, aiming to secure a more favorable trade deal before a looming August tariff deadline. “We will see how much progress we can make... to alleviate the effects of a very severe tariff schedule,” Marcos said before departing Manila. The U.S. recently raised its proposed tariffs on Philippine imports to 20%, up from 17% in April, despite a USD 5 billion trade deficit with the Philippines. Marcos, who arrived in Washington on Sunday, will also meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and U.S. business leaders. Philippine officials say the president will emphasize economic cooperation and argue that a stronger Philippine economy is vital for its role in the Indo-Pacific. Defense and security ties will also be part of the talks.
