The ANZ Business Outlook Index in New Zealand climbed to 65.7 in October 2024 from 60.9 in September, marking its highest reading since March 2014 as steady falls in interest rates injected new optimism into businesses. Expected own activity edged higher (45.9 vs 45.3 in September), and past activity hit its highest since March (-10.5 vs -18.5). In addition, export intentions strengthened (17.1 vs 13.8), with investment intentions notching an over 3-year top (20.0 vs 9.2) and employment determinations hitting their highest since November 2021. Pricing intentions increased further (44.2 vs 42.8) amid optimism in profit expectations (27.0 vs 22.2), a slight moderation in cost expectations (64.2 vs 66.8), and persistent wage pressure (77.0 vs 76.4). At the same time, credit availability rose (23.5 vs 19.1) and inflation expectations eased slightly (2.83% vs 2.92%). Residential construction held its rapid gains (38.7 vs 38.9) while commercial construction surged (26.5 vs 16.2).
