Malaysia’s economy expanded 4.4% year-on-year in Q1 2025, easing from 5% growth in the previous quarter, according to preliminary estimates. This marks the slowest pace of expansion in a year, driven by softer growth in services (5.2% vs 5.4% in Q4), construction (14.5% vs 20.7%), and manufacturing (4.2% vs 4.4%). At the same time, mining and quarrying output declined more sharply (-4.9% vs -0.9%), due to reduced production of crude oil, condensate, and natural gas. Meanwhile, agriculture rebounded (0.7% vs -0.5%), supported by stronger performance in fishing and other sub-sectors. On a quarterly basis, the economy contracted by 3.7%, following 2.7% growth in Q4.
