Malaysia's trade surplus plunged to MYR 6.4 billion in July 2024 from MYR 17.4 billion in the same month of the previous year, far lower than market estimates of a gain of MYR 12 billion. This marked the smallest trade surplus since June 2018, as imports grew more than exports. Year-on-year, purchases surged 25.4% to a record-high of MYR 124.7 billion, buoyed by rises in imports of intermediate, capital, and consumer goods. Meanwhile, exports rose at a softer 12.3% to an 18-month peak of MYR 131.1 billion, due to solid foreign demand. Considering the first seven months of the year, the trade surplus plummeted to MYR 72.5 billion from MYR 136.5 billion in the corresponding period of 2023.
