Malaysia will slash or remove import duties on about 98% of U.S. goods as part of efforts to lower bilateral tariffs, Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz told Parliament on Monday. This follows the U.S. reducing tariffs on Malaysian exports to 19% from 25%. Meanwhile. Malaysia will exempt certain U.S. agricultural products like fruits and seafood, but will retain its excise duties. It also declined to fully open strategic sectors such as the automotive industry. Zafrul noted that while Malaysian semiconductor exports are currently exempt from U.S. tariffs, they are under review under Section 232, and new tariffs remain a risk. To help narrow the trade deficit, Malaysia committed to major U.S. purchases, including USD 19 billion in Boeing aircraft, USD 150 billion in tech-related goods over five years, and USD 70 billion in U.S. investments over a decade. Other deals include LNG, telecom equipment, and coal imports. A joint statement will be released soon.
