Food prices in Japan rose 7.6% year-on-year in July 2025, accelerating from 7.2% in June and marking the fastest pace since February. Price pressures were broad-based, with increases seen in fresh vegetables (3.7% vs -1.5% in June), cereals (27.4% vs 29.0%), fish and seafood (2.5% vs 3.9%), meats (5.2% vs 6.0%), dairy products and eggs (5.3% vs 4.2%), fresh fruits (5.6% vs 5.2%), oils, fats, and seasonings (2.9% vs 2.3%), cakes and candies (10.8% vs 9.0%), prepared foods (7.1% vs 6.9%), beverages (9.2% vs 8.7%), alcoholic drinks (4.3% vs 4.3%), and meals eaten out (4.5% vs 4.5%). Among staples, rice prices surged 90.7% year-on-year, near the fastest pace in more than five decades, underscoring the challenge for Tokyo as it struggles to contain surging rice costs.
