The core consumer price index in Japan, which excludes fresh food but includes fuel costs, increased by 2.7% year-on-year in July 2024, the highest reading since February, in line with expectations. The core inflation gauge also accelerated for the third consecutive month following a 2.6% gain in June. Japan’s core inflation rate remains well above the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for over two years now, supporting the central bank’s hawkish shift this year. The BOJ shifted monetary policy in March, raising rates for the first time since 2007 and ending eight years of negative rates amid rising wages and high inflation. The central bank then followed up with another rate hike in July, raising rates from near-zero levels, while signaling willingness to lift rates further. However, the hawkish tilt led to a strong yen rally that caused a major unwinding of popular carry trades, jolting financial markets.
