Germany’s imports dropped 3.8% month-on-month to a five-month low of EUR 111.1 billion in May 2025, reversing a downwardly revised 2.1% growth in the previous month and underperforming market expectations for a 0.9% decline. The sharper reduction was attributed to spillover effects from rising U.S. tariffs and mounting headwinds in the domestic economy. Purchases from the EU contracted 3.6%, weighed by those from the Euro area (-3.2%) and non-Euro area (-4.2%). Also, arrivals from third countries shrank 4.1%, amid lower imports from the U.S. (-10.7%), China (-1.0%), and the UK (-4.0%) but increased from Russia (9.4%). For the first five months of the year, Germany’s total imports increased by 4.6% year-on-year to EUR 566.1 billion.
