The U.S. and China are expected to extend their tariff truce by another three months, according to the South China Morning Post, citing unnamed sources. One source said neither side will impose additional tariffs during the extension, which would prolong the current pause set to expire on August 12. The report comes ahead of the third round of trade talks, scheduled to begin later today in Stockholm, between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The previous two rounds were held in Geneva, as both sides seek to prevent a renewed escalation in their long-running trade dispute.
Bessent said he expects a truce extension to result from this week's negotiations, which will also cover a broader range of issues beyond tariffs, including China’s oil purchases from Russia and Iran. The inclusion of these geopolitical topics signals an expansion of the agenda, reflecting rising U.S. concerns over sanctions compliance and regional security.
