The unemployment rate in Canada eased to 6.9% in June of 2025 from the near-four-year high of 7% in the previous month, contrasting with expectations that it would increase to 7.1%. It was the first improvement in the unemployment rate since January, limiting concerns that economic uncertainty and tariffs from the US would further hamper Canadian growth. The number of unemployed individuals fell by 22,100 from the previous month to 1,552,500. In turn, total employment grew by 83,100 to 22,613,700, the sharpest increase since December, contrasting sharply from expectations that net employment would remain unchanged. The rise was supported by the sharpest gain in part-time employment in three years, mostly concentrated n wholesale and retail trade. Still, long-term unemployment was higher compared to last year, as 21.8% of the current unemployed population has been search for work for over six months. In the meantime, the participation rate inched higher by 0.1 percentage point to 65.4%.
