Retail sales in Canada are expected to have remained unchanged from the previous month in November 2024, according to a flash estimate, following the 0.6% increase in October, which was revised downward from the preliminary estimate of 0.7%. The October gain was driven by higher turnover in motor vehicle and parts dealers (2.0%), led by strong growth at new car dealers (2.5%) and used car dealers (2.5%). Additionally, furniture retailers (2.3%), health and personal care retailers (0.8%), and apparel and accessories retailers (1.2%) also saw higher turnover. Meanwhile, turnover was lower at gasoline stations and fuel vendors (-0.5%), marking the sixth consecutive monthly decline, and at food and beverage retailers (-0.7%) due to lower sales at supermarkets (-0.9%) and liquor retailers (-0.4%). From the previous year, retail sales were 1.5% higher.
