Retail sales in Canada likely plunged by 1.1% from the previous month in May of 2025, according to preliminary estimates. This would reflect the sharpest decline in turnover since March 2023 to suggest a higher impact of tariffs from the United States, driving consumers to refrain from spending usual amounts. In the meantime, retail turnover rose by 0.3% from the previous month in May, revised lower from the preliminary estimates of 0.5%. Sales rose sharply for motor vehicle and parts (1.9% to C$20.029 billion), sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, books, and miscellaneous (1% to C$4.057 billion), furniture (0.8% to C$3.898 billion), and food and beverage (0.2% to C$ 13.256 billion. On the other hand, retail turnover fell in gasoline stations (-2.7% to 6.054 billion), although volume of sales in gas stations rose by 0.4%.
