Retail sales in Canada likely rose by 0.5% form the previous month in April of 2025, according to preliminary estimates. This would extend the 0.8% jump in sales to C$69.8 billion during March of 2025, revised higher from the preliminary estimate of a 0.7% increase, to mark the highest growth in retail so far this year. Sales were higher in six of the nine subsectors of Canadian retail, led by motor vehicles and parts (4.8% to C$19.6 billion), despite the focus of tariffs on the sector by the US and the retaliatory measures by Ottawa. Retail turnover was also higher for clothing and clothing accessories (2.6% to C$3.8 billion), furniture, electronics, and home goods (2.1% to C$3.8 billion), and building materials (2.6% to C$3.9 billion). On the other hand, turnover fell for gasoline vendors (-2.7% to C$6.2 billion) amid lower gas prices, and food retailers (-0.2% to C$13.2 billion).
