Housing starts in Canada sank 17% from the previous year to a seasonally adjusted rate of 232,765 units in October of 2025, marking the lowest rate of starts in seven months. Likewise, urban housing starts in centres with populations above 10,000 sank by 17% to a rate of 255,179 in the period, while rural starts were at a rate of 22,062. Among the major urban areas, starts in Toronto sank by 42% from the previous year and those in Vancouver dropped 36%, offsetting the 104% surge in Montreal.
